Artist Statement:
My art practice tends to function as a vehicle to address my fairly liberal concerns alongside an inquiry and interest into the function of art through an examination of art practice and presentation. Often locating social issues and power dynamics, I additionally use my art practice to explore a variety of artistic concerns and influences, as well as to exercise my imagination.
The way I account for mediums with my artworks plays a very important role in how I develop my practice. I often search and select materials that may relate or enhance current projects in some capacity, or have some importance to the overall concept I am exploring with any given work. Throughout my artistic career I have developed an interdisciplinary body of work that outlines major transitions between different mediums. I have never been fully devoted to one material process, rather I am bound to the exploration and articulation of my ideas and perspective—and I try to allow the materials I select to reflect that methodology.
I identify myself throughout my practice; often even incorporating my physical representation in artworks, which I include as a way to acknowledge that the concerns and questions addressed in the artworks relate to the author. As a result, my artworks can seem at times journalistic and self-serving at times. Regardless, I feel my practice speaks truthfully about my perspective, which is the most important contribution I feel I can make as an artist with political and social concerns as an artistic motivation.
